Hello!

My name is Sude, and I am a second-year Biology student at the University of Bristol. This year, I am delighted to be working as a BILT Student Fellow, co-editing the Student Research Journal alongside Ranu and contributing to the Student Research Conference.

Alongside my studies, I have been a Course Representative for two consecutive years. This role has allowed me to engage with students and staff, understand different student experiences, and contribute to improving our learning environment. I have also gained experience in different research settings, including working remotely with researchers at UCL and in university hospital laboratories in Türkiye.

These experiences havestrengthened my interest in scientific research and given me an appreciation for the that goes into producing new knowledge.

Although I greatly enjoy laboratory research, this year I have decided to explore another side of the scientific process. Admittedly, putting my lab gloves aside has been harder than expected! Through co-editing the Student Research Journal, I hope to gain a better understanding of scientific publishing and how research is communicated to a wider audience. I am particularly interested in exploring the journey from developing an idea to sharing findings with others, and how effective communication can help research reach people beyond the laboratory.

One of the reasons I want to explore this side of research is that I believe everyone has the potential to develop groundbreaking ideas and make valuable observations. However, being able to communicate these ideas in a way that others can understand is an important part of being a scientist. This is why I am driven to make research and academic communication more accessible and attainable for every student. Through the Journal and Conference, I hope to encourage greater student engagement while providing opportunities for students to develop their research, writing, and presentation skills.

Coming from Türkiye, I understand how challenging it can be to step outside your comfort zone and navigate unfamiliar environments. I also recognise that people can experience the same opportunities very differently depending on their backgrounds and circumstances. This is one of the reasons I became a Course Representative and wanted to take on the role of a BILT Student Fellow. I want to help ensure that every student is considered when decisions are made and that everyone has the opportunity to pursue their interests and achieve their goals.

I am excited to contribute to this year’s Student Research Journal and Conference and help create opportunities for students to share their work and engage with research across different disciplines. I look forward to seeing the ideas students bring forward and the conversations they inspire. If you want to get involved with the Journal or the Conference, please feel free to reach out to me via email or LinkedIn.
