Using Teaching Case Studies as a Postgraduate Dissertation Option

Most of us use, or have used, case studies to teach students. Case studies are usually based on real-life companies and provide students with a good opportunity to learn in a simulation of a real-life scenario.

But how about involving Postgraduate students in conducting teaching case studies? And is it possible to offer this as an option for an MSc Capstone Project in place of a traditional academic dissertation?

Teaching case studies is a well-researched and provides a compelling narrative about a real-life problem or challenge organisation is facing. It usually includes comprehensive relevant information about that problem and demonstrates the complexity of a real-life situations.

The objective of a teaching case studies is to initiate a dialogue with prospective students (who would be using a case-study), encourage critical thinking and research, and evaluate recommendations. This is why, there is no need to create or propose one single solution. Instead, like in real-life situations, teaching case studies offers multiple perspectives in form of teaching notes (i.e. potential solutions and answers).

If you’re interested to find out more about using teaching case studies as a Postgraduate Dissertation Option, we are running a seminar with a guest speaker Prof. Hinrich Voss from Strategy, International Management & Business, and Entrepreneurship group in the University of Bristol Business School on Wednesday 5th June 2024 in Howard House 4.01. Prof. Voss will talk about his experience of supervising MSc students as they work on producing teaching case-studies. He will also share his experience and insights into publishing teaching case studies with Ivey Publishing.
