Lecturer, School of Geographical Sciences

In my experience during one-on-one supervision, Vickie allowed the student to drive the direction and content of the discussions. At each meeting, Vickie attentively and thoughtfully took notes as I divulged the many inspirations, discoveries, and philosophical tangents that I wanted to fit into my dissertation. Somehow, Vickie was always able to detect the similar stands of thought and, by seemingly only repeating what I had said to her, offered so much more clarity and structure to my own ideas and how all the seemingly disparate themes were related.

Academically, Vickie’s deep knowledge of cultural geography and love of her field of study is palpable; and in turn, I knew that the questions I had for her regarding the most recent or impactful books, articles, or researchers in the subfields of cultural and landscape geography would be answered with rigorous depth and enthusiasm.

Vickie understood how important it is to feel supported by one’s supervisor and peers both emotionally and academically, and she formed the foundation for our supportive community through her efforts to keep us connected through the dissertation-writing process.
