Meet the BILT Community

Meet the Student Fellows… Emma Segal

Hello! My name is Emma, and I am one of the BILT Student Fellows for this year. My focus is on the theme of ‘Research-rich Teaching and Learning,’ where I will be working alongside Nadia to organise the Student Research Conference and deliver the 7th edition of the BILT Student Research Journal (SRJ) as its Co-Editor-in-Chief.

Now in my final year of my Medical Microbiology MSci degree, I have developed my skills as a student researcher through projects aimed at improving diagnostics and treatments for bacterial infections, particularly in the context of rising antimicrobial resistance. Having been a University of Bristol student for three years, I have also applied my analytical and collaborative strengths in multiple student-led projects designed to enhance the student learning experience.

Previously, I worked with BILT on a project focused on improving feedback and performance in oral assessments, and with the eBiolabs team to help further develop their excellent online learning platform. Through these experiences, I have seen first-hand how student input can make a real difference to the academic environment, both within and beyond the university. It is for this reason that I am incredibly honoured to be part of a team that empowers students to see themselves as change-makers and supports projects that make academia more accessible.

The SRJ and Conference have a strong legacy of providing students with opportunities to engage in the research-rich culture at the University of Bristol while expanding their academic skillset. The high-quality work of past contributors and editors has reinforced the importance of this journal within the university environment, and I am incredibly proud to have the opportunity to shape how the SRJ and Conference will run this year. Building on the journal’s past successes, I hope to give all University of Bristol students the chance to be part of this important interdisciplinary space.

If you are interested in being involved with the BILT Student Research Journal or Conference, whether as an editor, reviewer, or author, please contact me via email (iu22655@bristol.ac.uk) or LinkedIn. I look forward to working with you all!
