Lecturer, School of Geographical Sciences
Innovative and dynamic work showed students how academics can disagree, and encouraged them to think, in their later essay assessments, about how to critically frame and evaluate huge bodies of literature and work in this geographical and historical area.
Joe is an incredibly engaging lecturer. Joe clearly loves what he teaches and whilst I initially may have had not much interest in the Industrial Revolution we all ended up loving it as much as he does. He made efforts to make our lectures interesting and varied and to make us question and critique the content – he made space for us to agree or disagree with him as we wanted and listened to our arguments.
Joe…created an inclusive learning environment – I witnessed one of his lectures last year, which was focused on gender inequality, and know other themes of inequality are woven throughout this unit. This care about social justice in theory feeds into Joe’s practice, and I have heard of cases where he has provided exceptional pastoral care to students on this course.
