The CREATE Outstanding Portfolio Awards were introduced in 2022 to recognise the outstanding practice showcased by academic and professional services colleagues on the PGCAP and HEA Fellowship Scheme. Assessors on these programmes nominate portfolios that have demonstrated outstanding practice in one or more of the following:

  • combining research excellence and innovative teaching practices,
  • developing innovative student-centred teaching and learning approaches,
  • creating dynamic, flexible and inclusive learning environments,
  • supporting and empowering students and colleagues to reach their potential.

Outstanding HEA Associate Fellowship Scheme Portfolio Award

Dr Shruthi Venkatachalam

Graduate Teacher Level 2, School for Policy Studies

Sruthi creates an inclusive and safe learning environment in which all students feel they belong.

Through the identification of shared universal values with students, Sruthi fosters critical dialogue around complex and sensitive issues in their subject matter, an approach which students highly value and benefit from.


Outstanding HEA Fellowship Scheme Portfolio Award

Dr Rob Thatcher

Lecturer, School of Physiology, Pharmacology & Neuroscience

Rob demonstrates strong academic citizenship in taking on wider roles within their School, as a Digital Champion, and has created dynamic and flexible learning environments for his students and demonstrates excellent practice in his level of responsiveness to student feedback.

Rob has made innovative improvements to his virtual learning environment, with accessibility and inclusion at the heart.


Outstanding HEA Senior Fellowship Scheme Portfolio Award

Dr Becky Selwyn

Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering,
School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering

Becky supports and empowers her students to reach their potential through the introduction of education research projects across her subject area which offer opportunities for successful and meaningful collaboration with students.

Through her sensitive approaches and organisation, Becky demonstrates inspirational and supportive leadership in developing educational research projects as a teaching and assessment activity within her department.


Outstanding PGCAP Unit 1 Portfolio Award

Dr Michael Henehan

Lecturer, School of Earth Sciences

Michael demonstrates the power of empathising with students and reflecting on his own experiences as a student to foster an environment in which his students feel welcome and able to thrive.

Michael works to support and promote diversity in his student community and demonstrates a deep sensitivity to the wider context of his subject discipline and how he teaches it. 


Outstanding PGCAP Unit 2 Portfolio Award

Dr Freya George

Lecturer, School of Earth Sciences

Freya has sensitively interrogated the diversity of her student cohorts and the intersectionality which influences student engagement and ability to access and participate in their learning.

By critically reflecting on the values and principles of inclusion which underpins her practice and the wider subject discipline in which Freya teaches, she has made effective and innovative changes to ensure field-based teaching carried out in her subject area is accessible and inclusive for all their students.
