School of Biochemistry

The team go above and beyond to ensure that each laboratory practical is set up exactly as required, testing all equipment and reagents to help ensure the experiments run smoothly. This allows students to have the best possible experience in the lab and gain confidence in their laboratory skills. […] Several students commented to me that this had been the best experience of their academic studies so far.

The technical team have worked hard this year to create a very inclusive environment, tailoring the laboratory environment to students with additional needs. For example, they have made changes to allow their coffee room to be used as a quiet space for students who need time away from the busy lab if they are struggling with the sensory onslaught that a big lab can cause. They are also happy to make changes if things aren’t working for staff or students due to the location of equipment, lighting, ventilation etc.

The team are exceptional at accommodating ALL of our students within the teaching laboratory, including those with study support plans. Laboratory stations are set up for students to work comfortably with everything they need. Students who need adjustments are provided with these effortlessly so as not to draw attention.
