BILT Briefing Issue 125

BILT Conference Randomised Coffee Chat

After the success of last year’s pre-conference Randomised Coffee Chat we decided to run the activity again this year and have over 60 people taking part!

Our BILT colleague Catriona met with PhD student Ritah in Boston Tea Party on Park Street and they had a great time discussing the trials and tribulations of being an international student and their own experiences of adjusting to a new academic context.

They also talked about Ritah’s research on heatwave adaption strategies in low-income African communities, which is investigating whether heat-resistant paint can be applied to the roofs of houses to reduce indoor temperatures and consequently heatwave-related mortality. They would both have liked longer to chat but are looking forward to meeting up again at the conference next week.  If you are meeting with someone don’t forget to send us a picture and let us know what you got up to.

We’re going to take the opportunity of (another!) quiet week in the lead up to our conference by highlighting some of our favourite case studies published over the last year.

We’re always looking for more case studies so please do get in touch if you have something you want to share!

We are still accepting applications for our Student Fellows programme for 2024/25. The Student Fellow programme is going into its eighth year and has proven impact as a co-partnership initiative. If you know any students who would be interested in this role, please pass on the details – all of which can be found on the Student Fellows webpage.

We welcome applications from students across all levels of study – our only stipulation is that they must be enrolled as a student between September 2024 – July 2025.

The deadline for applications is midnight on 14 July.

The question of AI and Assessment
BILT’s Fiona Hartley has shared this thought-provoking on the use of AI tools in teaching, learning and assessment and offers suggestions for implementing them in a fair and inclusive way.

Libraries and Decolonisation: an introduction for academic staff

Thursday 8 August 9:30 am – 10:30 am

Decolonisation is shaping and influencing how the University views itself and how it delivers programmes and services. As a central service, the Library plays an important role in this area. In this session for academic staff we aim to explore some of the connections between libraries and colonial power, discuss how information resources have the potential to be a key part in decolonial practice, and share practical tips for finding resources from under-represented communities and regions.
