Senior Lecturer in Modern and Environmental History, School of Humanities
The teaching was research-led, discussion based using source analysis. It was dynamic and engaging. Andy did an excellent job at encouraging all students to engage in the disciplines that are often neglected in the field of history.
The unit was effective in allowing me to make connections from the past to relate to our contemporary world, bringing in discourse about environmentalism, the supernatural, gender, sexuality, the animal world and more!
Andy is so passionate about the history of night time and the environment and this was really infectious in the seminars. It’s such a new and innovative field so it was awesome having a tutor who was so excited to be getting us involved in the discussions. He was really good at reminding us that a lot of the questions and difficulties we were coming back to each week are yet to be extensively answered in academia, so we should think outside the box and our new ideas and arguments are valid and valuable.
Such a kind and encouraging tutor, leads discussions in an open and interested way, takes comments from students into account and places them within his own ideas in a collaborative way.
Dark pasts was such an exciting unit because of the uniqueness of studying the history of the night. As a new field, Andy really encouraged us to develop our own ideas and took them seriously. Because of this, I felt really empowered when writing my essay and challenged myself, achieving the highest grade I have ever got.
