Meet the BILT Community

Meet the Student Fellows… Esther Ng

Hi there!

I’m Esther Ng, one of the Student Fellows for BILT. With AI rapidly shaping various industries, its impact on teaching and learning is undeniable. My project,  focusing on AI in Teaching and Assessment, aims to contribute to a more personalised, equitable, and effective educational experience. In a world were AI is the latest hot topic in every sector, focusing on this topic felt like second nature given my curiosity and interest in creating impact within the University to improve the learning and teaching experience for staff members and students.

Being a transfer student from Malaysia, moving to the UK was a massive change for me, especially considering I had never stayed overseas for a long period. Before moving, I spoke to a few friends who had been in Bristol for a while and I was so entranced by everything I heard about Bristol, from the culture, food, and people, I instantly knew it was the right choice for me even before I arrived! As a final year Biomedical Science student, my science background made me very excited to be embarking on this project to improve our perspective of AI in academia and the education sector.

Having experienced education in both Malaysia and the UK, I’ve witnessed diverse approaches to learning. With my unique blend of cultural and educational experiences, I believe I can offer valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by this project.

During the second year of my degree (my first year in Bristol!) I was accepted into the role of one of the Co-Leaders for the Race Inclusion Advocates (RIA) which is a programme that strives to improve inclusivity across all academic and support services by acting as a representative for students of colour’s voices. Throughout my term with RIA, I’ve come to understand the finer details of how the university works and how all the departments come together to complete the interconnected network that is the University of Bristol. My exposure to the university’s inner workings as a Race Inclusion Advocate has driven me to want to express my voice in a more academic setting within the university, which was when I started looking into the Student Fellow role at BILT.

As a Student Fellow at BILT, I’m eager to explore the transformative potential of AI in education. I hope that my work as a Student Fellow acts as a platform to amplify the student voice in the academic community and to inspire other students to take charge to better their experience at the University of Bristol. I want international students to know that they are allowed to take up space and contribute to the ever-changing landscape of education and that this contribution will not fade away once we move back to our home country.

Whether it be outside or within my work, I love to talk about almost anything! I believe in continuous learning not just through reading but through talking to others about new topics that interest them because I never know if I might be interested in them too. If you would like to have a chat about my project or a topic that interests you, you can reach me through my LinkedIn
