Show, Tell and Talk: Active Learning

Our popular Show Tell and Talk series returns for another year kicking off with a sharing innovations workshop on active learning. This event takes place on 19th November from 1pm – 3.15pm.

Embedding effective and inclusive active learning into teaching and curriculum design, which engages, motivates and supports all students in their learning is an important University of Bristol strategic aim.

2026 NTF and CATE candidates announced

We are delighted to share that we are supporting the application of three brilliant colleagues for National Teaching Fellowships this year – you can read more about their experience and teaching journeys in their introductory blogs:

We are also supporting a CATE nomination for the CREATE team.

Blackboard Baseline Course Standards Co-creation Workshop

Over the upcoming months, the Digital Education Office will be working on creating the Baseline Course Standards. This will be a set of good practices in Blackboard course design, co-created with students and staff. It will provide a shared foundation to ensure an accessible, consistent, and comprehensive learning experience for students across all units and programmes.

The next co-creation workshop with staff will take place on Wednesday, November 19 at 2pm – 3:30pm in room 1.21, 35 Berkeley Square. We will provide tea, coffee and biscuits.

  • A new approach to ‘Encountering Ancient Worlds’
This blog by Shelley Hales and co-written with two previous students who had taken the unit, demonstrates how emphasis on reflection, communication about learning methods and successful cohort community building in a first year unit can have a wonderful impact on students’ experience and helps their transition to university.
  • Risk, restraint, and remedy in reflective journals
BILT Student Fellow Pratham Gupta, leading on the inclusive assessment theme, shares this piece on reflective journals as a form of assessment and delves deeper into how personal experience can shape this type of work, it’s limitations and the potential opportunities it can bring.

Principal Fellowship workshop, 5th November.

To support prospective applicants, the Universities of Bristol, Bath Spa, Bath, and UWE Bristol have come together to offer prospective Principal Fellows a programme of workshops, writing retreats and opportunities for peer mentoring and buddying support.

Tools for Tempered Radicals : Changing the system from within

20 November 2-4pm, AIMS CENTRE SR1 E323

What drives organisations to be more environmentally engaged? How can motivated staff within organisations work to move things forward? Can such ‘tempered radicals’ really make a difference, and how do they relate to activists protesting from outside.

Through examples and discussion, this workshop will explore what it means to work as a tempered radical. We will consider a number of different ‘drivers’ that impact organisations’ engagement, and how tempered radicals can put them to work to accelerate the pace of change of society.

The 2 hour workshop will be hosted by Professor Chris Preist, University Academic Director of Sustainability.
