Meet the BILT Community

Meet the Student Fellows… Jay Liu

Hello! I’m Chaojie (Jay) Liu, and I hope you’re having a fantastic day!

As I am on my fifth year at the University of Bristol, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible journey it’s been. Having completed both my undergraduate degree in Finance and my Master’s in Economics and Finance here, I’m now a PhD student in Accounting and Finance, focusing on understanding the world of artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision-making in financial markets. I like to think of myself as a young financial economist who is passionate about solving practical problems that will shape the future.

My research touches on a wide range of topics, from ESG and environmental issues to animal welfare, retail investment, investor behaviour, machine learning, deep learning, and even Chinese philosophy. I’ve had the privilege of presenting my work at various events like the Bristol Student Research Festival, the International Association of Applied Econometrics annual conference, the Chinese Economists Society annual conference, and the FSSL PGR Conference.

This year, I’m honoured to serve as one of the BILT Student Fellows, and I’m thrilled to be part of delivering the 6th edition of the BILT Student Research Journal (SRJ). The SRJ is a vital part of the research-rich culture here at the University of Bristol. I highly appreciate the previous contributors: Amy, Caroline, and the other BILT staff, as well as all the past student fellows (editor-in-chiefs), for their hard work on the first five editions.

It’s a privilege to continue the legacy of the SRJ, and I’m excited to bring fresh energy to the project to make it more inclusive and impactful. This year, we’re introducing a special section for the first time, titled “Interdisciplinary Research for the Future”. This section will spotlight groundbreaking research on trending topics about AI, climate change, geopolitics, and other global issues. I believe this will foster greater interdisciplinary collaboration across the university and inspires us to tackle global challenges together, not just for Bristol, but beyond. Moreover, I am going to expanding the range of subjects featured so that more students can participate and showcase their research. “Run by students, for students.”

Excited? I sure am! If you’re interested in contributing—whether as an editor, reviewer, or author—don’t hesitate to reach out via email or LinkedIn. I look forward to working with you all!!!
