Justin Williams

Associate Professor in Music, School of Arts

Justin co-leads a weekly writing group in the Department of Music. He dedicates research funds, organises, and hosts relevant research events, such as the ‘Black British Music’ study day and an ‘Afternoon of Dilla’. These engage students from a range of levels and disciplines as well as helping promote public scholarship.

Justin helped me to feel validated in my work as a researcher, supporting me greatly in my development. As a researcher of colour and an immigrant, it has often felt like an uphill battle to participate fully in higher education, and this felt particularly true during my PhD. Despite a bruising first year during the COVID pandemic, Justin encouraged me to be persistent, providing the resources for me to stay on track with my project while also nurturing my curiosity to explore various topics. If ever I mentioned something I was curious about, Justin would never fail to produce a book from his shelf that would point me in the right direction. His gentle coaxing to always read just a bit more has truly solidified my love of learning.

Justin is one of the most approachable, available and responsive academics I have ever had the pleasure to engage with. His demeanour is warm and encouraging, his knowledge is comprehensive and his guidance is invaluable.

I came to Bristol as a neuro-divergent student with a lot of anxiety about how to navigate a research degree. Justin has always been kind and reassuring, and I’ve never felt like asking questions or floating ideas is an imposition. He always offers a balanced perspective on opportunities, and his knowledge of my field (which is quite niche) is stellar. I really trust his judgement, and his willingness to help, or read drafts, or give really useful advice, makes me feel excited about my research rather than worried about navigating myself through it all.

Dr. Williams has never failed to support my development as a researcher. He forwards me opportunities he finds, he uplifts my research, he gives references gladly for jobs I apply to, and he is always enthusiastic to discuss new topics or ideas I may have. Through doing the PGR Internship Scheme with him for two years during my PhD, as well as being employed by him as a Research Assistant, I have gained invaluable experience as a researcher and been able to write an essay with him which will be published in a Routledge book in early 2026. In co-authoring with me on this essay, Dr. Williams is helping boost my own academic profile and fostering my research skills.
