Jonathan Rigg

Chair in Human Geography, School of Geographical Sciences

What makes this environment so invigorating is also Jonathan’s remarkable breadth of knowledge, which extends far beyond my immediate area of comfort or familiarity. Whether I come to him with a well-developed argument or a loosely connected idea, he always engages with it seriously—often challenging my assumptions or offering entirely new perspectives that open up fresh lines of thought.

He encouraged me to face uncertainty head-on, to reflect deeply throughout my fieldwork, and to trust that insight often arises slowly and unexpectedly through immersion. His support was never about offering quick fixes.

Without a doubt, Jonathan’s critical mind, his integrity, and his way of engaging with the world have left a lasting imprint. He has helped me develop not only as a researcher, but as someone who thinks, feels, and inquires with care — a way of being I will carry with me for the rest of my career.
