SUMMARY:Show Tell and Talk: 'Active and inclusive learning' workshops
DESCRIPTION:“Active learning engages students in the process of learning through activities and/or discussion in class\, as opposed to passively listening to an expert. It emphasizes higher-order thinking and often involves group work” (Freeman et al.\, 2014). Research also demonstrates that active learning can allow students to take agency in their own learning (Harris et al\, 2020); can involve working in diverse groups on community and global issues (Pasquerella 2022) and can narrow achievement gaps benefiting all students (Inside Higher Ed\, 2022). \nThis full afternoon will include: \n\nA curriculum design workshop (90 minutes) – Providing an opportunity to hear about University priorities related to the theme\, give space to reflect and develop your learning and teaching practices whilst also providing tips and advice for implementation best practice in your work.\nA sharing innovations workshop (90 minutes) – Providing an opportunity to hear about a range of staff led projects take place across the University related to the theme. There will be an opportunity to share ideas\, information and ask questions as well as an opportunity for informal discussions with colleagues.\n\nTea\, coffee and biscuits will be available from 12.45 pm and again at 2.45 pm. \nBoth workshops will take place in Room 1.20\, 35 Berkeley Square (Helen Wodehouse Building). \nCurriculum design workshop (1 pm – 2.30 pm)\nStaff register here Students register here \nFacilitator: Fiona Hartley – BILT \n\nSharing innovations workshop (3 pm – 4.30 pm)\nStaff register here Students register here \nFacilitator: Fiona Hartley – BILT \nContributors: \n\nElena McNeilly and Bea Learmouth\nSally Dowling\nEmily Bell\nKiah Tasman\nBronwen Burton and Caroline McKinnon\nHafsa Zaneb\nDave Gatrell\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Show Tell and Talk: Active Learning
DESCRIPTION:Staff register here Students register here \n  \nEmbedding effective and inclusive active learning into teaching and curriculum design\, which engages\, motivates and supports all students in their learning is an important University of Bristol strategic aim. Active learning is fundamentally about student engagement and participation. It involves students going beyond passive listening in lectures or ‘sitting back and being fed information’ to ‘learning by doing’ and being agents of their own learning\, for example through discussion\, problem solving\, role-play\, and creating something new (Gibbs\, 1988; Kolb\, 2015). \nThis sharing innovations workshop will provide an opportunity to hear from a range of colleagues about how the theme is being embedded at UoB\, why it is important and what active learning projects\, supported by BILT\, are being undertaken at the University. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion with colleagues. \nThis 90 minute in-person workshop will take place in Room 2.26\, 35 Berkeley Square \nSchedule (subject to change): \n\n1.15 pm Registration and light refreshments\n\n\n1.30 pm – Presentations from each of the Education Development Projects working in this area\n\n\n15-20 minutes for a Q&A session with all presenters.\n\n\nAny remaining time is allocated for informal networking/questions over refreshments.\nFinish at 3 pm\n\nFacilitators: \n\nRos O’Leary – Head of BILT\nLouise Howson – BILT Team\n\nConfirmed Contributors: \n\nAshley Dodsworth\nKiah Tasman\nAndy Wakefield\nRose Murray\nBethan Hawley\nMore to be added\n\nCatering arrangements:\nTea\, coffee and biscuits will be provided (from 1.15 pm). SUMMARY:Show Tell and Talk: 'Generative AI'
DESCRIPTION:Staff register here Students register here \nGenerative AI is reshaping how knowledge is created\, shared\, and applied — and with it\, how we understand originality\, authorship\, and critical thinking. It is not just a new tool: it challenges how we teach\, learn\, and define expertise within disciplines. To prepare students for their futures\, we need to design learning experiences that build on strong foundations in critical thinking\, ethical reasoning and discipline-specific knowledge\, enabling students to engage meaningfully and independently with AI technologies. \nThis sharing innovations workshop will provide an opportunity to hear from a range of colleagues about how the theme is being embedded at UoB\, why it is important and what Generative AI projects\, supported by BILT\, are being undertaken at the University. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion with colleagues. \nThis 90 minute in-person workshop will take place in Room 2.26\, 35 Berkeley Square \nCatering arrangements:\nTea\, coffee and biscuits will be provided (from 1.15 pm). Drinking water is also available. \nTarget Audience:\nTeaching and teaching support staff. \n  \nFacilitators \nSarah Davies \nAisling Tierney \n  \nConfirmed presenters (more to be added): \nMarios Kremantzis\nLaura Contu\nIsabel Murillo Cabeza\n\nAbstracts\nLaura Contu: Enhancing Research Literacy Through Critical Engagement with Generative AI in Psychological Research Methods Units\nWhile generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools offer promising possibilities for enhancing learning in Higher Education (HE)\, there are fears that over-reliance on GenAI may reduce opportunities for students to practice and develop critical thinking skills\, logical reasoning and academic integrity. As employers’ demand for AI skills rise\, there is a clear mission for universities to develop effective methods of teaching strategic and ethical use of GenAI in ways that promote the academic development of students. Through weekly interaction with GenAI for active revision and two assessed reflective tasks\, this project aims to create and reflect on strategies and activities that aim to help students develop their research literacy\, critical GenAI literacy and ethical practice. The research will involve 3 focus group sets distributed over the 2025-26 academic year\, that aim to explore students’ views shift on GenAI\, GenAI skill development activities and GenAI output evaluation summative assessment. The data will be analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis process underpinned by a realist perspective (practical views\, likes\, dislikes\, changes) and separately underpinned by a social constructionist perspective (how the psychological objects of GenAI\, activities and assessments are conceptualised). The findings will inform the development of GenAI pedagogical practice in HE.\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Engaging Students - an introduction to improvisation skills for active learning and inclusive teaching (led by Bristol Improv Theatre)
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nTue 11th February 2026\, 1.30 pm – 3 pm \nVictoria Rooms G27 Recital room \nJoin experienced performer/facilitators from Bristol Improv Theatre for an interactive Plenary workshop. We’ll introduce core concepts from improvisation through interactive activities designed to build connection and rapport in an active learning environment. This includes the improvisation concept of ‘happy fail’ and ‘leap and discover’ as tools for building bravery and resilience for teachers and learners. \n➔ Resilience: In improvisation\, we practice games where we celebrate or cheer when participants ‘get things wrong’. This can build resilience in learners because we embrace mistakes and see failure as an opportunity to grow. \n➔ Creative Facilitation: Participants are more likely to engage with learning when they feel relaxed and confident with their peers. Creative icebreaker exercises & framing can accelerate connection and trust in the learning environment. \n➔ Bravery: in improvisation we practice the tool of ‘leap & discover’ or ‘say or do the first thing’. This cultivates bravery because participants are encouraged to risk a ‘wrong’ answer. \n➔ Authenticity: Authenticity accelerates connection and reliability. We use techniques in improvisation to practice being ourselves in front of audiences. \nThis is not a performance or performing workshop. Every activity will be an invitation and offered to do in pairs or small groups\, including discussion and reflection. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Trying out tablets in active learning spaces
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nWednesday 11 February 2026\n3:30 pm – 5 pm\nRoom 2.23\, Howard House \nEffective and inclusive teaching – both in the round and in active learning spaces – involves moving around the classroom to observe\, communicate with\, and support different groups of students. Using a tablet can enable you to do this while sharing\, annotating\, or co-creating learning materials. This hands-on session is an opportunity to design\, try out\, and share approaches to using tablets in your teaching. \nBy the end of this workshop\, you will be able to:\n– design effective and inclusive teaching approaches using a tablet\n– navigate practical issues involved with teaching using a tablet\n– make an informed decision about which device you will use in your teaching. \nBring your own device or borrow one of our iPads or 2-in-1 laptops to try out ideas during the session. \nFurther information: \nUsing Tablets in Active Learning Spaces and in the Round\nWhy use tablets?\n\nMobility and presence: Tablets allow teachers to move around and engage with students\, managing learning activities from anywhere in the room.\nEnhanced interaction: Effective teaching in active learning spaces and in the round relies on proximity and engagement. Tablets can support this by enabling teachers to control presentations\, annotate materials\, and manage digital tools while remaining among students rather than in a fixed position.\nSeamless facilitation: Tablets make it easier to create\, annotate\, display\, and share learning materials in real time.\n\nWhat are the potential benefits for teachers?\n\nImproved learner engagement: Being able to move around the room helps maintain attention and promotes interaction.\nFlexible teaching workflows: Teachers can switch between slides\, digital whiteboards\, polls\, apps and other resources without returning to a fixed location.\nResponsive instruction: Being able to capture\, annotate and share student contributions encourages active participation and supports adaptive teaching.\n\nWhat are the potential benefits for students?\n\nCloser\, more inclusive teaching: Students may feel more connected if teachers are mobile\, making eye contact with them\, rather than stationary at the front.\nIncreased opportunities for participation: Tablets make it easier for teachers to invite student input\, display student work or integrate tools that promote interaction.\nMore dynamic learning materials: Live annotation and shared digital content support multimodal learning experiences and can improve understanding.\n\nIn short:\nTablets can support more interactive\, flexible and engaging teaching in active learning spaces (of any shape). Their mobility\, versatility and ability to support real-time engagement offer significant benefits for teaching and learning. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Co-designing a Critical Reflection Resource: Embedding Bristol Skills Profile in Community Engaged Learning Projects
DESCRIPTION:Register interest: Complete this short form to receive a calendar invite.   \nHosted by the Community Engaged Learning Forum (CELF)\, attendees at this event will co-design a critical reflection resource that can be used in teaching and learning\, particularly where partnership working is present.  \nThis session will be of interest and relevance to any colleagues that could embed critical reflection into student activity – through teaching\, learning\, assessment or extra-curricular activity.  \nWe are interested in hearing from colleagues’ experiences and perspectives  to collaboratively develop a resource that could aid embedding critical reflection into our practice and how this can be enhanced by using the Bristol Skills Profile.  \nThis is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a resource we hope will be used across the University and are keen to include as many voices – from junior academics to Professors – in its creation as possible.   \nThe session will be divided into two sections:  \n\nFirst we will introduce the value and role of critical reflection in teaching and learning\, paying particular attention to its role in CEL pedagogy. We will also explore and discuss various models of critical reflection. (45 mins)\n\nWe will then work collaboratively\, bringing in our own perspectives and experiences to codesign a critical reflection resource which will sit alongside the existing CEL Resources that we launched in November last year. (45 mins) \n\nMain session aim: To explore how purposeful approaches to critical reflection can enhance Community Engaged Learning practice; supporting more meaningful and mutually beneficial engagement with community partners and fostering richer learning and personal development for students.  \nLocation: G14 Life Sciences Building   \nWe will start by introducing the value and role of critical reflection in CEL\, before exploring different models and approaches to embedding this in units and programmes. As many of you are already working to embed BSP within teaching and learning\, this session will give us space to share best practice and co‑design reflective resources that can support meaningful CEL.  \nRegister interest: Complete this short form to receive a calendar invite.   \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Show\, Tell and Talk: Inclusive Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Staff register here \n\nInclusive or ‘designed for all’ assessment aims to enable all students\, whatever their characteristics or background to engage in and demonstrate their learning. The university’s assessment strategy attention to design as a central component of inclusivity. Traditionally\, discussions of inclusivity have centred around adjustments\, such as extra time\, provided for students to level the playing field and ensure equitable access to assessments. Such adjustments are often made at the individual level when students present with evidence for needing them. They typically have no impact on the design of the assessment itself. The University’s strategic approach emphasises that inclusivity should be integral to an assessment and not simply a post hoc adjustment made for access purposes.\n\nThis sharing innovations workshop will provide an opportunity to hear from a range of colleagues about how the theme is being embedded at UoB\, why it is important and what Inclusive Assessment projects\, supported by BILT\, are being undertaken at the University. SUMMARY:Supporting Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Schools
DESCRIPTION:How can your School champion the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and pedagogic research?\nHow can SoTL help you enhance student learning\, outcomes\, and satisfaction?\nAnd how can you empower colleagues to get involved?\n\nJoin us for an interactive session exploring how Schools can build vibrant\, sustainable cultures of SoTL. Together\, we’ll share real experiences\, practical strategies\, and honest reflections on what helps (and what hinders!) effective SoTL development.\n\nYou’ll hear from colleagues across a range of Schools who have taken different approaches to growing SoTL activity—what they tried\, what succeeded\, what they would rethink\, and the positive impact their work has had on both staff and students.\n\nThis session is also an opportunity for you to reflect on how SoTL is currently supported in your own School\, identify areas for growth\, and discuss concrete ideas for taking SoTL practice forward. Whether your School is just beginning its SoTL journey or already has established activity\, you’ll gain insights\, inspiration\, and connections to help strengthen your local culture of educational scholarship.\n\nREGISTER HERE\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading...
