SUMMARY:IEN Workshop 1: Models of Interdisciplinary Education
DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary Education Network\n\n\nHow can we create learning experiences that help students think beyond disciplinary boundaries and engage with the complex challenges that are increasingly part of the world we live in? This series of four workshops provides a space for colleagues from across the University to explore key questions in interdisciplinary education. Through conversations with educators and students\, insights from research\, and opportunities for collaborative reflection\, participants will consider ideas around curriculum design and assessment\, and what this means for student and staff identity and expertise. This is an excellent opportunity to build connections across the University with colleagues who share an interest in developing interdisciplinary learning and teaching.\n\n\nThere is no single model of interdisciplinary education. Across the University\, colleagues are designing and delivering interdisciplinary education in diverse ways with different educational aims\, and drawing on different disciplinary traditions of teaching and learning. In this workshop\, we will hear short presentations from colleagues involved in a range of interdisciplinary teaching\, and explore the curriculum intent that underpins different programme structures and pedagogy. This will form the basis of a conversation about how different models support students to engage with multiple disciplinary perspectives and develop an integrated understanding. \n\nIn this workshop\, we will hear short presentations from colleagues involved in a range of interdisciplinary teaching\, and explore the curriculum intent that underpins different programme structures and pedagogy. This will form the basis of a conversation about how different models support students to engage with multiple disciplinary perspectives and develop an integrated understanding. \nOther workshops in this series:\n\n\nWorkshop 2: Students’ Experiences of Interdisciplinary Teaching \n\n\nThursday 21 January\, 14:00-16:00\, Room 2.26\, 35 Berkeley Square\n\n\nThis workshop will explore how students experience different types of interdisciplinary education\, and what they value about it. The session will centre students’ voices\, drawing on their reflections about their motivations for choosing interdisciplinary programmes\, their expectations\, challenges\, learning experiences\, and career aspirations. We will consider how interdisciplinary study can shape students’ intellectual development and identity\, and what this means for our curriculum design\, teaching practice\, and student support. \n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 3: Assessment in Interdisciplinary Education\n\n\nTuesday 23 March\, 10:00-12:00\, Room 2.26\, 35 Berkeley Square\n\n\nAssessment in interdisciplinary education raises important questions about the knowledge\, skills\, and academic identity that we want students to develop. In this workshop\, participants will explore their assumptions about what “excellence” in interdisciplinarity entails\, and how this relates to assessment practices. We will go on to consider how assessment can support students to navigate the complexity that is often a part of integrating perspectives\, and develop interdisciplinary expertise. \n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 4: Identity and Transformation for Interdisciplinary Educators\n\n\nTuesday 4 May\, 10:00-12:00\, Room 2.26\, 35 Berkeley Square\n\n\nInterdisciplinary education challenges teachers to rethink established disciplinary pedagogies and ways of understanding and valuing expertise. Drawing together themes from previous workshops\, we will reflect on what interdisciplinary education opportunities mean for our own academic identities and practices\, The workshop will provide an opportunity to consider how we can continue to develop as interdisciplinary educators and build a communuity of practice across the University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Threads (Opens in new window)\n Threads\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading…
